Me and the Family in the Wakulla News

Robert Buccellato of Crawfordville is an author, as well as Historian for the Clerk of Court of Leon County.
He has published three books to date, “Florida Governor’s Lasting Legacies,” “Finding Dan McCarty,” and “Jimmy Carter in Plains: The Presidential Hometown.” The latter tells the fascinating and inspiring story of Jimmy Carter’s surprisingly successful campaign and 1976 victory of becoming the 39th President of the United States.
The book describes how growing up in the small town of Plains, Ga., shaped the man, and how together he and his community of supporters, known as the Peanut Brigade, changed the nation through an unprecedented hands on approach to politicking.
It walks you through the presidency, highlighting those things that set Carter apart from presidents before him, such as his position on civil rights and his eventually winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Buccellato also describes the inevitable changes the town of Plains underwent as a direct result of the influx of tourists and media attention surrounding the campaign and presidency. Much effort went into preserving the small town’s charm despite it’s growth during this period.
The book is not only well written, but it is also artfully illustrated with an array of old photographs to support and enhance the story.
From the moment you meet Buccellato, it is obvious that he has a great appreciation for history.
More importantly, he is a story teller who enthusiastically imparts bits of historical whimsy to anyone who will listen.
When asked what inspired him to write this book or why Jimmy Carter, he generally answers that he was largely influenced by his grandfather, a 20-year legislator in the Florida House of Representatives during the Golden Years of Florida Politics.
However, in a speaking engagement and book signing at the Gwinnett County Public Library in Atlanta earlier this year, he admitted that upon further reflection, the answer actually runs deeper than that. Carter, as a peanut farmer from South Georgia, beat all the odds and became a huge success who “has the ability to make things that seem extraordinarily impossible not only possible, but easy, with hard work and determination,” he says.

<div class="source">KRYSTAL SHEPPARD</div><div class="image-desc"></div><div class="buy-pic"></div>
“And that feeling that you and your community can run, and win, a presidential campaign, is something, I think, that speaks to the best of our system,” Buccellato says. “And it’s still evergreen, this possibility of improving and helping to evolve our system.”
An avid supporter of preserving the “pockets of history across the country, because many have been lost” Buccellato says that upon entering Plains, one sees “miles of hill and tree, people feel they’ve stepped back in time to a lifestyle of day’s past.”
In fact, he has been known to compare Crawfordville to Plains.
When asked about this, he readily offered noteworthy similarities between the two towns. For instance, the old world feel of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s is still present in both places.
In Plains, it’s in the preservation of the old Train Depot that acted as campaign headquarters, largely because it had the only public restroom in town.
Here, the sense of old Florida can be found in the beach bungalows and white sand beaches.
Additionally, both towns have what he described as a detached sense of community, still supporting a feeling of “the leisurely agrarian lifestyle and a freedom from being plugged-in.”
The book mentions that shortly after the election, Plains received its first traffic light.
This brought back memories of growing up in Crawfordville, during a time when there was only one traffic light.

Buccellato has been writing since around the age of 12, beginning with fiction and later focusing on non-fiction. Originally from Hollywood, Fla., he moved to the panhandle in 1998.
After attending FSU, he married his wife Stephanie and welcomed their son Croston to the family last year.
In addition to his family, career as historian and numerous book publishing’s, Buccellato manages book signings, radio shows and speaking engagements, as well as a YouTube channel and a Florida history blog.
He is currently working on writing his fourth book, a biography of Jimmy Carter.

Florida Squeeze article Finding Dan McCarty

Our good friends at THE FLORIDA SQUEEZE are just too nice
here is a lovely little article they wrote about the book

FindingMcCarty

Finding Dan McCarty the new book by Robert Buccellato has been released and is available via Amazon.com (click on the link on the book title to purchase a copy). I’m honored to have contributed to this work writing a Forward which was about the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s in Florida politics.

"A thin layer of glass separated him from the crowd; the endless stream of people walking past his open casket, glancing down at his lifeless face. His body lay resting inches from the main rotunda stairway where just a handful of years earlier he could be seen running up in a mix of energy and youthful vigor that would make him Florida’s youngest speaker and Governor. South Florida’s first Governor, a progressive who was also a realist, McCarty was now stricken by a heart attack. His policies now at the hands of his nemesis, the arch conservative Senate President Charley Johns. But fate and happenstance stepped in and allowed his state to flourish none the less. Finding Dan McCarty is a story about two very different men on similar journeys of personal and professional discovery. On the one hand is an Historian reaching out to the last members of this distant moment in Florida’s history to understand the life of a deceased politician, long hidden under a cloak of mystery. The other is a fallen Governor, who left behind in his wake a lasting legacy of achievement. A story which paints vivid portraits of McCarty’s many enemies, allies, and the historic events that formed the Governor’s thrilling brief life. Written by Robert Buccellato author of the acclaimed “Jimmy Carter in Plains.”

The Star Wars Holiday Special

I know I know may seem a bit out of place to talk about a star wars special on a blog for a book about Jimmy Carter. However any Carter fan worth their salt will know that a giant poster of Star Wars graces the halls of the Jimmy Carter Presidential library. Not to mention the fact that the movies came out during the Carter Presidency and the New star wars movie that is just days away from rocking our world.
Plus, its my blog and I can do what I want. Its not like anyone reads it anyways. Now heres a bit of back story info for you, that I told  painstakingly took from Wikipedia

The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 1978 American television film set in the Star Wars galaxy. It stars the film's main cast while introducing the character Boba Fett, who would appear in later films. It is one of the first official Star Wars spin-offs, and was directed by Steve Binder. The show was broadcast in its entirety only once, in the United States, on Friday, November 17, 1978 (the week before Thanksgiving[1]), on the U.S. television network CBS from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time (EST), pre-empting Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk; and on the Canadian television network CTV from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time.It was also broadcast in New Zealand on TVNZ and in Australia on the Seven Network.

Now here is the beautiful thing about this shit salad of a holiday special, it was created as a shameless way to cash in on the Star Wars mania taking hold of the nation at the time. It has nearly every major actor from the movie (no amount of money could have gotten them Guinness) and there is at least ten minutes worth of footage from the movie in this "special"
So you would think that given the level of involvement, everyone would have to embrace it. Nope!!!  George Lucas acts like it doesn't exist and the Star Wars Fandom love to hate it. Anyway I mention all of this because its Christmas and Man I really need some Star Wars love today.

So I know this is terrible and believe me no one would argue that. I think Carrie FIsher was drunk during its creation. The guy who played C-3PO apparently has to be piss drunk to stand watching it. But there is a lovely 1970s lameness about it. Kinda like all those terrible Epcot rides that are now closed
anyway google it and enjoy

or you could do what I did and just watch this review instead

Liberalism to New Labour

From Liberalism to New Labour:
The party evolution of Great Britain
Robert Buccellato

It has become a very common sight in Great Britain, the image of a tired and beaten Prime Minister saying farewell. (Seldon, 1999). Handing over the keys to government to a rival at the polar end of the political spectrum. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the head of the Labour party and the appointed leader of the parliamentary democracy of Great Britain had been defeated. It was a troubled term of office, being in the summer of 2007 after Tony Blair resigned the post after ten years and three general election victories. (Parties and Elections in Europe). It is a pattern for the newly elected prime minister to choice a retirement date that is far off from the following general election. This way the party may pick it's own leader and thus have a better chance of collectively supporting an electable new prime minister for the future. This was not the case, and it became very clear that Brown proved to be a very polarizing figure. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011).
The Labour party could have been the majority party for a generation, had it not been for their support of the Iraq War. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011). It had suffered reduced majority in the election of the early 2000's and now with Brown's premiership, it seemed very likely that 2010 would be a conservative year. Indeed it was, only not enough. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011). When the election results came in it seemed that the people were bitterly divided over who should govern. Labour had won a majority of seats, but it was not big enough majority to request the forming of a government. The conservatives had robbed Labour of it's status, while not proving itself as the people's clear choice.  After some brief failed talks, it  came time for the Brown to step down and make way for a possible coalition government. Labour leaders tried to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, but it proved too difficult. The conservatives were desperate to take control and were offering the liberals much more than Labour was willing to match. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011).
The Conservative leader David Cameron would form a new government with Liberal Democrat Leader Crigg as the deputy Prime Minister. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011). Brown made the usual speech outside Number 10 Downing Street that all defeated Prime Ministers make as the offer the victor there support and best wishes. Only unlike the US President who has 80 days to continue to lead the nation into the new year and work with his successor during a long transition process. The English Prime Minister is not allowed to live at 10 Downing Street (the official home of the Prime Minister) in the weeks leading up to the General Election and is ordered to live both the home and the office that very day. So a sad Brown left that office and the place he had trained his mind, body, and spirit for, was now part of his past.
This paper is about both the party system in Great Britain and it's evolution from the days of Tories and the Liberals, to New Labour and Coalition governments. The purpose of beginning our story with the departure of Brown and the birth of the Conservative Coalition is to prove a major political point. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011) The difference between politics and policy and the fact that politics does not exist in a vacuum. The whole reason way Brown was not named Party leader in 1994, was because he was not a reform minded Labour Leader. He was more of a socialist in his thinking than Tony Blair. Blair was able to modernize the party and lead it to victory in much the same way as President Clinton had done before him. But like both Blair and Clinton, they were able to move the people toward a central view of government but not their respective parties. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011) Brown was prime minister of a party and a nation left exhausted by their former leader's short comings but hopeful due to his grand designs and achievements. But, Brown was still the man he was in 1994. He had not reformed, he was not part of a new Labour mentality, and it showed. He did not realize that his own views were left in a vacuum, while the world continued to move without him. He had become a failed double treaded, a leader far past his "use by" date. (Gallagner,Lavar,Mair, 2011).

President Obama Make Election day a national Holiday!!!!

A new social media campaign is being started by Voting Rights Activists encourage Obama to Declare Election Day 2016 a Federal Holiday. I know I know!!! The Republicans will hate it, what will they ever like, maybe A federal holiday for Old Ron 40 Reagan !!!

However since all the new voter id laws, such an action would liberate millions of voters that are currently struggling to get to the polls. The pattern of Presidential elections is such that over 55 percent are now participating. But, that number could be closer to 60 or 70 percent with a national holiday. Plus it could actually result in a more balanced future approach to congressional and lower ticket races.
Anyway heres the link and I hope the five people that read this will sign the petition
